Fox Wins February Ratings Sweeps

NEW YORK - February ended with double milestones in television: the first-ever sweeps month victory among all viewers for Fox, and the first-ever fourth-place finish for once mighty NBC.

Sweeps are held four months a year, when Nielsen Media Research ratings are closely watched to set local advertising rates.

The rankings are set even though the current sweeps period runs through Wednesday. Fox will also win among the 18-to-49-year-old age demographic that advertisers pay a premium to reach.

Fox's first sweeps month win since the network began prime-time broadcasting in 1987 is slightly deceptive. Take the Super Bowl out of the equation, and Fox would finish third behind CBS and ABC, Nielsen said.

Still, it shows the continued strength of "American Idol" and the development of a promising drama in "House."

It's a more alarming outcome for NBC, which has particularly struggled on Thursdays, a night it once dominated. NBC's viewership in February was down 15 percent compared to February 2004, Nielsen said.

Last week's ratings illustrated NBC's problems. It had only two programs ranked among Nielsen's top 15 most popular shows of the week — "ER" and "Law & Order" — and both of those dramas are more than a decade old.

NBC said the competition is closer than this month's ratings make it appear. Take away events like the Super Bowl, Grammys (news - web sites) and Academy Awards (news - web sites) from its competitors, and NBC would finish second among total viewers, the network said.

Fueled by the Oscars (news - web sites), ABC was a clear winner last week with an average of 14 million viewers (8.9 rating, 14 share). Fox was second with 12.1 million viewers (7.3, 11), followed by CBS at 11.8 million (7.6, 12), NBC at 10.1 million (6.7, 11), the WB at 3.5 million (2.4, 4), UPN at 3.3 million (2.1, 3) and Pax TV at 550,000 (0.4, 1).

ABC's Peter Jennings took some ribbing for his news special on UFOs — one newspaper ran a "picture" of Jennings with a space alien — but its strong showing of 11.6 million viewers eclipsed NBC's Thursday night comedies.

NBC's "Nightly News" won the evening news ratings race, averaging 10.6 million viewers (7.4 rating, 14 share). ABC's "World News Tonight" had 10.2 million viewers (7.1, 13) and the "CBS Evening News" 7.8 million (5.4, 10).

A ratings point represents 1,096,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 109.6 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.

For the week of Feb. 21-27, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: "Academy Awards," ABC, 42.1 million; "American Idol" (Tuesday), Fox, 28.3 million; "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," CBS, 28.1 million; "Oscar Countdown," ABC, 27.7 million; "American Idol" (Wednesday), Fox, 26.7 million; "American Idol" special (Monday), Fox, 23.5 million; "Survivor: Palau," CBS, 21.6 million; "Without a Trace," CBS, 21.4 million; "Lost," ABC, 19.5 million; "CSI: Miami," CBS, 19.5 million.

German jobless rate at new record

More than 5.2 million Germans were out of work in February, new figures show.

The figure of 5.216 million people, or 12.6% of the working-age population, is the highest jobless rate in Europe's biggest economy since the 1930s.

The news comes as the head of Germany's panel of government economic advisers predicted growth would again stagnate.

Speaking on German TV, Bert Ruerup said the panel's earlier forecast of 1.4% was too optimistic and warned growth would be just 1% in 2005.

"Do something!"

The growth warning triggered anger even from government supporters, who said the Social Democrat-Green administration of Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder had to do more.

"We are not going to create more jobs with growth of 1%," Harald Schartau, head of the Social Democrats in the northern state of North Rhine-Westphalia, told ZDF television.

"We say to our friends in Berlin, you have to persevere and create more impulse for growth."

Many German newspapers had the figures a day ahead, splashing them with angry headlines on Tuesday morning.

The mass-market Bild tabloid used red type to splash the phrase, "Do something!" across its front page.

Anger

The German government insists its efforts to tackle the stubbornly-high levels of joblessness with a range of labour market reforms are only just getting under way.

The core is the "Hartz-IV" programme introduced in January to shake up welfare benefits and push people back into work - even if some of the jobs are heavily subsidised.

According to the Federal Labour Office, the changes have contributed to the rise in the official unemployment rate.

Some three quarters of February's 180,000 additions to the jobless total were the result of January's reclassification, it said - although it acknowledged the weak economy and cold weather hitting the construction industry were also to blame.

Different numbers

Still, some measures suggest the picture is not quite so bleak.

For one thing, January's reclassification boosted the jobless total by more than 500,000 that month, as many benefit claimants were added to the list for the first time thanks to the new rules.

Moreover, adjustments for seasonal changes give an overall unemployment level of 4.875 million people or 11.7% - admittedly up 0.3 percentage points from the previous month.

And the most internationally-accepted methodology, designed by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), says Germany had 3.97 million people out of work in January.

The ILO defines an unemployed person as someone who in the previous four weeks had actively looked for work they could take up immediately.

ILO-based figures also suggest that 14,000 new net jobs were created that month, taking the number of people employed to 38.9 million.

SÓ PARA LEMBRAR.
A FESTA DO SEM�FORO É NESSE S�BADO


Reservem um espacinho na agendinha d vcs na noite do dia 5 de Março q essa festa promete ter uma galera bem grande do ORKUT e do FOTOLOG e também muuuita caipirinha! Por esses e outros motivos promete ser bem LEGAL!!! hehe

A festa tem 1 tema, q é "Traffic Light Party" (Festa do Semáforo/Sinal/Sinaleira, ou seja lá como for q vocês chamam essa coisa... rsrsrs) e isso significa q na porta, cada pessoa irá receber 1 pequeno objeto p/ colocar na roupa c/ 1 das cores q vcs preferirem d acordo c/ as intensões d vocês!! Terá 3 cores (as cores do semáforo, é claro!!!)... verde, vermelho e amarela, ou seja, se vocês escolherem Verde = que vocês estão afim d "ficar" c/ alguém (ou dar 1 azarada... ), se Vermelho = fora d mercado (namora ou não quer nada c/ ninguém mesmo) e se Amarelo = indeciso (durante a balada vai pensar se rola ou não!!! ) Basicamente é isso... o resto é aproveitar... já estou me vendo zoando lá dentro.. hehehehe

launched the Online Volunteering service, in partnership with NetAid

activities. Each of them has contributed their part - however large or
small - to help hundreds of local NGOs, international and bilateral
development organizations, and UN agencies in their efforts to achieve
the Millennium Development Goals.

Throughout this year, we want to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the
Online Volunteering service, and highlight stories of online volunteer
contributions and impact.

Study: Your Brain Works Like the Internet

Your brain functions a lot like the Internet or a network of friends, scientists said Tuesday.

Researchers used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study the activity in peoples' brains and how different regions connect. They conclude the human brain can be visualized as a complex interacting network that relies on nodes to efficiently convey information from place to place.

Very few jumps are necessary to connect any two nodes, the study found.

"This so-called 'small world' property allows for the most efficient connectivity," said Dante Chialvo, a physiologist at Northwestern University.

Other networks -- social and biochemical -- rely on the same principle.

The scientists measured the degree of correlation between activities in tens of thousands of brain regions. They found that many of the nodes had only a few connections, and a small number of nodes were connected to many others. These "super-connected" nodes act as hubs -- as with the Internet or your most gossipy friend -- getting the word out quickly and widely.

So maybe, the thinking goes, if you can figure out how the Internet works -- or why your gossipy friend succeeds -- then you can grasp your own mind.

Or, put more scientifically, these findings of basic principles of brain function suggest "that the underlying properties can be understood using the theoretical framework already advanced in the study of other, disparate, networks," Chialvo said. The research could help frame other studies of the brain's role in schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease and chronic pain, Chialvo and his colleagues say.

The results were detailed in the Dec. 31 online version of the journal Physical Review Letters.
